BrokeLlama

I needed to design a website to disclose my personal finances to the public. I wanted it to be interactive and more than just spreadsheets. I focused on the user experience of people coming to find out how my journey is going.

Note: This is all very real.

Statistics

This project is less about how far a website can be pushed, and more about how can a website be utilized for a specific purpose. I intentionally wrote content and found data to help support the story that my site was conveying; which was: I am bad with money, and so are a lot of people my age.

Interactive Grid

Finances are not pretty, but I asked myself why can’t they be? In my most trafficked page, I have all of my debt in one place. Not only that, but if you are curious as to how I found myself with that particular loan, or the specific APR of a credit card, it’s a click away.

Affordable Help

The most impact part of this project was the real phone calls I had with student loan holders, many of whom were parents who took out loans for their kids to go to school, since they didn’t have the same costs at their age.

It was these phone calls where I walked through all the steps, making sure that they knew I wasn’t educated in this, but that I had done enough research to help.

I charged $50 per session while other student loan lawyers were charging around $400. I didn’t see this as a side gig, I saw it as a way to give back to the community.

I was heartbroken to have to stop these services, but because the student loan SAVE plan was paused indefinitely due to court challenges, I could not help people any longer.
